What California is Doing about Harmful Algal Blooms

Spring Lake algae bloom and ducks

The State Water Board is actively developing numeric water quality objectives to protect the MUN and REC-1 beneficial uses from four cyanotoxins: microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a, and saxitoxins. In addition, they are working on a narrative water quality objective for harmful algal blooms, along with a program of implementation to achieve both the numeric and narrative objectives. For ongoing updates about this project, please refer to the following link: Harmful Algal Blooms Water Quality Objectives for California Inland Surface Waters, Enclosed Bays, Estuaries, and Coastal Lagoons | California State Water Resources Control Board.

I highly recommend subscribing to the Freshwater Plans and Policies Email List for notifications about upcoming meetings. You can do so here: Biostimulatory Substances and Biological Integrity Provisions | California State Water Resources Control Board. The subscription box is on the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Regarding the current Basin Plan Amendment, the deadline for tribes to submit designation requests and provide water use information is December 2026. We have a meeting scheduled with Region 1 and Region 2 staff on June 5th, and I will follow up with you and other Mishewal Wappo Tribe representatives after that meeting to share any relevant updates.
